The Study on the Use of Acronyms in Cross-Culture Supply Chain Management Project in Automotive Business

1 Introduction
1.1 Need for the Study
With the fast development of globalization, there have been an increasing number of auto makers who have set up their production sites in targeted consumer markets. More and more joint ventures have been established so as to realize the local production and distribution of new cars. To obtain the maximum profits out of a project, not only should the company strive to expand their sales and market share, but also it has to improve the process of sourcing for raw materials, and to deliver its finished products to the end users in perfect condition. For automotive companies in particular, there are usually a number of different business entities involved in the various stages of the supply chain, including tier one manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors and retailers; therefore, a supply chain management project team is usually composed of members from various cultural backgrounds. To increase the efficiency and accuracy for daily communication, it is of vital importance for the project team to apply acronyms for those intensively used terms when they address business matters in the automotive field. From the academic point of view, the study of the acronym is also of great necessity and importance. Acronym is a linguistic process that has existed throughout history but for which there was little to no naming, conscious attention, or systematic analysis until relatively recent times. It became much more common in the 20th century than it had formerly been. In English, acronyms pronounced as words may be a 20th-century phenomenon. The purpose of this thesis is to study the usage of acronyms in cross-culture supply chain management projects in the automotive business, so as to have a better understanding about how to apply linguistics to our daily business as a tool, which can tremendously improve the specialization and efficiency of our respective professional field.

2.1.1 Definition of acronym
An acronym is an abbreviation formed from the initial components in a phrase or a word. These components may be individual letters (as in laser) or parts of words (as in Benelux). There is no universal agreement on the precise definition of various names for such abbreviations or on written usage. In English and most other languages, such abbreviations historically had limited use, but they became much more common in the 20th century. Acronyms are a type of word formation process, and they are viewed as a subtype of blending. 2.1.2 Definition of supply chain management
