Communication is an important aspect of our lives. It is hard to imagine a life where there is absolutely no communication. In fact, maybe it is not even possible to lead a life without communication and that is the reason we see that even the hearing impaired,dumb and visually challenged people learn some way to communicate with the others.

In other words, communication is merely an expression of oneself and the exchange of ideas between people. In a day about 70 percent of our time is spent in communicating with the others. It is a well known fact that good communication is the back bone of any organization.

Communication can be of different types such as verbal communication, non verbal communication and written communication. In case of verbal communication, it is merely by using speech and language that the communication takes place. In case of non verbal communication, there is no exchange of words, but it may be gestures or signs or facial expressions that are used for communication. In case of written communication, a letter is used to express oneself. This could again either be a hand written letter or a typed letter.

A person may have brilliant ideas in his mind, but unless they are communicated to others, it is not possible to implement that idea and it is also difficult to finish all the tasks on one’s own. Good communication skills are an added advantage and people with good communication skills are an asset to any organization as these people can work their way around the others because of their communication skills.

Communication is the production and exchange of information and meaning by use of signs and symbols. It involves encoding and sending messages, receiving and decoding them, and synthesizing information and meaning. Communication permeates all levels of human experience and it is central to understanding human behavior and to nearly all public health efforts aimed at fostering health behavior change among individuals, populations, organizations, communities, and societies.

1.1Speaking skills

Oral communication is a vital component of the English language arts curriculum and provides the base for growth in reading, writing, and listening abilities. Oracy consists of both verbal and nonverbal communication. It is important that teachers recognize that nonverbal communication is culture specific, and be aware of the differences that may exist across cultures when students express themselves nonverbally.

As learning and applying the skills of oral English are so closely related, the classroom should be a place where the use of spoken language is sensitively supported and where active listening is developed and valued. Talk enables students to make connections between what they know and what they are learning, and listening helps them to acquire knowledge and explore ideas.

Talk can be immediate and spontaneous, or planned and deliberate. Confidence and enthusiasm are critical factors in oral language development, and because much oral language is immediate, it involves taking risks. Student learning is most effective when there is a relationship of mutual trust, when students' oral language is accepted and a variety of communication styles are accommodated in the classroom, and when students have frequent opportunities to talk in formal and informal situations.

1.2Listening skills

Listening is an essential part of the communication process. Students spend the majority of each school day listening and much of what students know is acquired through listening. It is essential that students have opportunities to practise the behaviours of effective listeners.

Listening is more than hearing; comprehending spoken language involves process- oriented thinking skills. Because listening involves the use of language and thought, the ability to listen effectively develops as students' language abilities develop and mature.
